When someone would bring up Park Tavern, I’d always think the same things. That it’s right on the park, the $1 beer ‘when it rains, we pour’ promotion, all the parties I’ve attended there, great bar for hanging out and drinking, ice skating at The Rink, but never did I think ‘Park Tavern is a great place for sushi’.

Well, my thinking has been changed quite effectively by Chef Chapin Vilasineekul and a wonderous experience with a Himalayan Salt Block!

The sushi at Park Tavern is pretty amazing. It’s important to know that the fish is overnighted from the Honolulu Fish Market, who are down at the docks in the early am picking out the best fish and sending it straight to Atlanta. Park Tavern is one of the only restaurants in the world to have access to the best and freshest fish through this market and also one of the only restaurants to feature seared rare kobe that is 100% waygu beef. When creating his new sushi menu Chef Chapin Vilasineekul was adamant that Park Tavern feature only the best.

One of the cool new additions to the menu is the Salt Block Experience, which is fantastic for a group of friends or a great date idea. A Himalayan Salt Block is heated to 700 degrees in the oven and stays hot at your table for 30 minutes. Much like fondue or Korean BBQ, you create your own meal by searing sashimi fish and the previously mentioned top of the line kobe beef on the block to enjoy custom sushi hand rolls.

The Salt Block Experience is $29 per person and includes edamame, mixed green salad with ginger dressing, sushi rice, seaweed wraps, beef, fish and seasonings to make your own hand rolls.

So now, when someone says Park Tavern, I’ll definitely think ‘great sushi’!

Click here to read the original post in Date Night Magazine…

I’ll be honest; prior to this date, I wouldn’t have considered Park Tavern for a sushi outing (yes, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to raw fish). But, the Salt Block Experience has changed my mind completely, and I want to shout from the rooftops: “Park Tavern has amazing sushi! Trust me!”

Let me begin.

On our fourth or fifth date (but who’s counting?), George and I decided to go to Park Tavern for sushi. We went on a Monday night and I loved the quiet, laid-back vibe in the dining room – much different than a Friday or Saturday at one of Atlanta’s favorite party spots and event venues. We chose Park Tavern’s Salt Block Experience in order to find out what the sushi at this joint is all about. Plus, a red hot Himalayan salt block is intriguing.

The experience started with edamame and green salad (both up to par), and then we were presented with our salt block, a sizzling hot stone for cooking our fish and meats. With this impressive block comes everything you need to make delicious little sushi rolls: tender wagyu beef, sashimi grade premium fish, seaweed wraps, rice, avocado, cucumber, cilantro, sauces, wasabi, garlic and more. You sear the meat lightly on each side on the block, then go to town piling your seaweed wraps high with whatever your sushi-loving heart desires. I like to think of it as making your own petite Asian tacos, and let’s face it: they’re much healthier than the meat, cheese and flour tortilla Mexican variety.

Park Tavern’s uber-talented sushi chef, Chapin Vilasineekul, came out to chat with us during dinner and gave us the lowdown on the high-quality fresh food. The wagyu beef (that means “best of the best” in the meat world) comes from an exclusive supplier and Park Tavern is the only restaurant on the East Coast that has it. The fish is flown in every single day from Hawaii. I’m just going to say it: Park Tavern may have the most A-list sushi in town. Seriously.

On this particular night, we got lucky, Chef Chapin needed to get rid of some rare, pricey fish. We were happy to help. After the first to-die-for taste, I thought George was going to hoard it for the rest of the night. He even tried to knock my chopsticks out of my hand when I went in for a piece. (Just for the record, playing with chopsticks is not considered bad table manners if it’s in the name of flirting). Definitely ask Chef Chapin if he has any specialties when you visit. As long as your date knows how to share.

The Salt Block Experience is perfect for any date, be it a 1st, 2nd or 50th. It provides you and your date with something to do and talk about, and sharing an experience always brings two people closer together. Plus, it’s a “fine dining” type meal, yet you can wear jeans and sneakers in Park Tavern’s casual atmosphere. The Experience is $29 a person, so if money isn’t an issue, then I say go for it with a brand new guy or gal. It’s not like you have to feed each other with your fingers. Aside from the Salt Block, all of Park Tavern’s sushi is fantastic, so you could go with the intention of just ordering a roll or two, and then make the spontaneous decision to salt block it up and show your date just how wild you can be.

Experiencing something as sizzling hot as a Himalayan salt block over dinner can only lead to getting hot and heavy after dinner, right? Ok, so maybe that was just me. But, it can’t hurt, right?

When you think “sushi in Atlanta”, do you think “Park Tavern“? It’s probably time you do.

My (limited) experiences at Park Tavern have included rehearsal dinners and weddings, apps and beer on the patio, not for sushi and never did I expect the uber-cool evening we had last week. My hubby and I were badly in need of a date night, since we tend to be work-aholics and date nights often consist of dinner on the couch…with our laptops. We’d heard a lot lately about Chef Chapin Vilasineekul’s Salt Block Experience and, frankly, we were intrigued. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of a searing-hot salt block inches from your fingertips at dinner?

Since we were on a mission to try the Salt Block Experience, we ordered right away. The Salt Block Experience starts with a fresh, crisp green salad with a salty, gingery, light dressing (no bowl of iceburg lettuce with orange “ginger” dressing, like you’re normally served pre-sushi) and a heaping plate of edamame (and by heaping, I mean more than any two people can possibly eat…except that we did), while the chef is preparing the salt block and all its accompaniments. Chef Chapin came out to greet us and also recommended one of his signature sushi rolls – the Piedmont Roll (spicy hamachi and asparagus roll topped with tuna tataki, jalapeno, crispy rice, avocado and spicy soy – pictured above)- his own creation. park-tavern-500-10th-street-atlanta-ga-chef-chapin-salt-block-experience-1 He earned his first points that night with this colorful, tasty roll, that packed more than a little heat but without letting it completely overwhelm the flavors and for being personable, friendly, and clearly passionate about his food.

By the time we finished our salads and starters, the Salt Block Experience was ready to begin. First the Himalayan Salt Block is brought out – it looks like a large marble trivet. It’s been heated to 700+ degrees in the oven and then on the stovetop in the kitchen (it truly is HOT – if you don’t believe me, as the diner who walked by and park-tavern-500-10th-street-atlanta-ga-salt-block-experience-hand-roll-chef-chapin – you guessed it – touched it). Chef Chapin explains that the salt block creates a perfect sear on meat. The ingredients he places on the table or such high quality that only a light sear is desired (in other words, don’t leave them on the block too long!) The proteins are a 100% Wagyu beef and three fresh, sushi-grade fishes: big-eye tuna, Hawaiian walu and Tasmanian salmon, accompanied by a colorful array of possible toppings such as fried garlic, cilantro, real wasabi, ginger, sesame seeds, cucumber, avocado, rice and of course, seaweed wraps. The Wagyu beef was easily my favorite – it had a rich flavor and was tasty wrapped with fried garlic, cucumber, avocado and little rice. The fish was so fresh it was almost a shame to cook it at all, but we couldn’t resist the opportunity to play with the salt block (after all, that’s why it’s there!). Making the hand rolls was an adventure, but all part of the fun!

Chef Chapin chatted with us throughout the meal, filing us in on little tidbits of information that you may not readily know, just from being a diner at Park Tavern. For example, Park Tavern is the only restaurant on the East Coast to carry 100% certified Wagyu beef. (He later presented us with a certificate proving that it truly is 100% Wagyu beef and tracing the bloodline of the cow we just consumed back to Japan – sadly, it even states the name of the cow we just consumed, which happened to be LMR Itozurudoi 813T. I’m trying not to compare it to my dog’s AKC papers…) Also, though chefs have been using salt blocks in their kitchens for years, Chef Chapin is the one who brought it out to the table, creating this unique interactive dining experience.

As a side note, if you’re not totally stuffed after your Salt Block Experience, then I highly recommend dessert. Chef Chapin’s homey apple fritters (pictured) combine apples and cinnamon, rolled in panko bread crumbs and flash fried, served with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. It’s heaven in a bowl – and you may not want to share.

The verdict on the Salt Block Experience – a great date night, especially a first date. It gives you something to talk about, something to do with your hands (that is, ahem, socially acceptable), and something to explore together. Also a great girls’ night out or celebratory dinner (think birthdays, anniversaries, boss’ day). We even saw a few families sharing the experience when we were there! At $29.00 per person, it’s an afforable and super-enjoyable night out!
